1st April in Cyprus – A Day of National Significance
In this article, the Cyprus law firm G Kouzalis LLC will inform you about 1st April in Cyprus.
The 1st of April is a day of great historical and national importance in Cyprus, marking the beginning of the EOKA struggle (1955-1959) against British colonial rule. This day is commemorated annually as a national holiday, honoring the sacrifices made by Cypriots in their fight for independence.
On April 1, 1955, the National Organization of Cypriot Fighters (EOKA) launched an armed campaign to end British rule and achieve Enosis (union with Greece). The movement, led by Georgios Grivas (Digenis) and supported by Archiepiskopos Makarios III, sought to liberate Cyprus through guerrilla warfare.
The British had governed Cyprus since 1878, formally annexing it in 1914. By the 1950s, nationalist sentiments had grown strong, and peaceful diplomatic efforts for self-determination had failed. The armed resistance of EOKA aimed to pressure Britain into granting Cyprus independence.
On April 1, 1955 a series of bombings and attacks against British military and government buildings signal the start of the revolt. On 1956, Archiepiskopos Makarios III is exiled to the Seychelles by the British. Also on 1957-1958, intense fighting continues between EOKA fighters and British forces. It is very important to mention that in the April 1st fight for independence, the Greek Cypriot fighters NEVER engaged any attacks to British Civilians and their families.
On February 1959 the Zurich and London Agreements lead to the establishment of an independent Republic of Cyprus in 1960, rather than union with Greece.
Each year, Cyprus observes this day with official ceremonies at memorials and monuments honoring fallen fighters. Also parades and school events, where students recite poems and perform patriotic songs. Church services held in memory of those who fought for Cyprus’s freedom and public speeches by government officials and veterans, reflecting on the historical significance of the struggle.
Despite the complexities of Cyprus’s modern history, April 1st remains a symbol of national pride, unity, and resistance against colonial rule. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom and the enduring spirit of the Cypriot people.
